When did Linguistics fall out of favour with Languages? Or why did Languages want nothing to to with Linguistics until well into the 80s (in some august places)? Some Facebook groups (for Language and Linguistics) warn that "only literary people can join this group". Oxbridge very late in the game allowed MFL to be tainted with Linguistics, and most MFL departments opt to teach their own version for Language study (descriptive or prescriptive, never scientific). As for Philology, which could have saved the day, it has now been invisible for a long while, as a quaint off-shoot of Classics perhaps. Is class at work, as Linguistics is not as high-end as French or German (in their time)?
