Tsundoku: according to the Metro paper, this is a Japanese term for the buying of books that might end up in a pile, unread (I am paraphrasing - most likely, books bought while other books await to be read). I regard stray books (given away, found in "please take me" piles) as compulsory literature, that sometimes needs a home and sometimes has to survive rain.
